💰 ₹1000 Crore Investment to Transform Chandigarh’s Healthcare
The total project outlay is pegged at ₹1000 crore, excluding land cost:
₹500 crore for civil construction
₹500 crore for state-of-the-art medical machinery, diagnostic devices, and digital infrastructure
The central government will fund this project based on NITI Aayog’s strategic recommendations, aiming to boost public healthcare access and reduce patient burden on PGIMER and GMSH-16.
🏛 A Centre of Excellence on AIIMS Lines
Conceived during the Union Home Secretary’s visit to Chandigarh in 2024, this project was prioritized as a flagship healthcare initiative. Originally planned as an expansion of GMSH-16, the Centre instead proposed building a new Centre of Excellence similar to AIIMS to cater to regional demand.
This super-specialty hospital is expected to serve patients from:
Punjab
Haryana
Himachal Pradesh
Jammu & Kashmir
Uttarakhand
Remote parts of North India
🚑 What Makes This Hospital Future-Ready?
Integrated Public Health Lab for rapid disease tracking and research
Digital-first Telemedicine Hub for remote consultations and outreach
Medical College & Training Facility to nurture the next generation of doctors
Helipad-enabled Emergency Response Unit
Sustainable Infrastructure built for scalability and disaster resilience
⚠️ Medicity Project in New Chandigarh Still in Limbo
While Chandigarh is making rapid strides, the Medicity in New Chandigarh remains largely incomplete. Planned as a 2000-bed hospital hub, it is yet to materialize fully—making the Sector 53 hospital the frontrunner in regional healthcare transformation.
“Apart from this, an integrated clinical and public health laboratory, advanced imaging and diagnostics, and a modern academic block will be developed. The administrative wing will be built separately,” confirmed a senior UT official.
